Testing Your Breakaway System
The breakaway system applies the trailer brakes if it ever separates from your truck. Test it before every trip.
How to test
- With the trailer hitched, pull the breakaway pin out of the switch.
- Try to pull forward slowly. The trailer brakes should drag hard.
- Put the pin back immediately so the battery doesn't drain.
Keep the battery charged
A breakaway battery that sits for months goes flat. Charge it regularly or use a breakaway kit with a built-in charger.
Attach the cable correctly
Clip the cable to the truck frame or hitch receiver, not to the safety chains or ball mount. Leave enough slack for turns.
